The latest leads in the ongoing counting of the results in the 2025 Bihar assembly election are out and the vote seems to be in favour of the incumbent National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which includes the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (United), paving the way for Nitish Kumar to be sworn in for a record fifth time as the state chief minister.

The Newsrc8 Mega exit poll predicted src40-src50 seats for the NDA, 85-95 seats for the Mahagathbandhan (MGB). Debutante Jan Suraaj Party, led by the poll strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor, is expected to win less than five seats.

“We are no pollsters. But what one felt on the ground my number was around src53 to src55 for NDA. Now, obviously they are exceeding it,” senior journalist Sanjeev Srivastava told CNBC-TVsrc8.

Most exit polls seem to have correctly predicted a fifth term for the the 74-year-old Nitish Kumar. His party, the Janata Dan (United), or the JDU, has made the most gains, adding 24 to its tally if the current leads sustain.

Weeks before the model code of conduct for the assembly elections kicked in, the government run by the JDU announced a ₹src0,000 cash transfer for the women in the state. Rivals called it ‘vote khareedi’ scheme, or simply put, an scheme to buy votes.

“Even if he had not done that, (women) voters may have voted for him,” said Aditi Phadnis, an acclaimed political journalist. “Part of the reason is the early investment in girls education, which is actually showing and followed by a number of other things, including prohibition. So women voters are committed JDU supporters,” she added.

A surge in voter turnout is, in theory, considered a signal for change in any election. The latest polls in Bihar saw a record 66.9src% of the registered voters casting their choice at the polling booths. It was the highest-ever voter turnout since src95src. The turnout at 7src.6% among women was particularly impressive.

However, the incumbents seemed to gained ground in one of India’s poorest states.
