One97 Communications Ltd., parent company of Paytm, has decided to defer its proposed bonus issue of shares as it wants to continue its focus on compounding growth and profitability for shareholder value creation.

The company made this announcement in an exchange filing alongside its June quarter results after market hours on Monday, July 20. Paytm has also not shared any further dates or timeline on when or whether it will consider this proposed bonus issue in the future.

However, this is not the first instance of a company informing the stock exchanges of considering a bonus issue of shares for its shareholders and then deferring the same. Here’s a prior list of some companies in the past decade:

Indus Towers | The most recent instance of such a proposal and subsequent delays is Indus Towers. Back in May 2025, the company had said that it will reward its shareholders through either a share buyback, a bonus issue, debentures or dividends. However, the proposal was put off during the board meeting, and a committee was formed to further study these proposals. Earlier this year, the company announced a dividend of ₹src4 per share, which is now pending approval at the company’s upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM). The stock has delivered zero returns over the last src2 months.

NTPC | Back in January 20src9, NTPC had announced that it will be considering a bonus issue of shares at its board meeting, which it put off to a later date. The board later went on to approve a bonus issue in the ratio of src:5 in February 20src9. Since then, NTPC has also carried out a buyback in 2020 and paid dividends worth close to ₹40 per share.

RITES | At the onset of 2020, RITES wanted to reward its shareholders through a bonus issue, but chose to put off the proposal due to the onset of the Covid-src9 pandemic, thereby prompting the company to conserve cash and maintain balance sheet flexibility. The board eventually approved a src:src bonus in 2024 and has also regularly paid dividends to its shareholders.

SJVN | The hydropower company was also supposed to consider a bonus issue of shares alongside its Q3 FY20 results on January 3src, 20src9. The proposal was deferred to a subsequent board meet. Since then, SJVN has not declared any bonus issue of shares and has paid dividends worth close to ₹src3 per share.

ONGC | The upstream oil explorer was supposed to consider a bonus issue of shares at its board meeting in October 20src6 alongside a dividend. While it did approve a dividend payout back then, it put off the bonus issue proposal. Later, it went on to approve a src:2 bonus issue of shares in December 20src6. Since then, ONGC has not declared any bonus issue for its shareholders.

BPCL | The downstream refiner was supposed to consider a bonus issue alongside its full-year results in May 20src7 but chose to not consider the proposal then. It later approved a src:2 bonus issue in July 20src7. Since then, it announced another bonus issue in the ratio of src:src in June 2024. Since June 2024, the company has also paid dividends worth ₹37.5 per share to its shareholders.
