The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, dust storms, hailstorms, and gusty winds in Delhi and neighbouring states. At the same time, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across parts of southern and northeastern India as the southwest monsoon continues its advance.
The monsoon is expected to push further into parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar over the next few days, aided by favourable atmospheric conditions.
For Thursday, the weather office has warned of thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 60-70 kmph, gusting up to 80 kmph, across parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan. Hailstorms are also likely at isolated places over Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
In the national capital, residents can expect a partly cloudy sky turning generally cloudy later in the day. Very light to light rain, thunderstorms, lightning, dust storms, and strong winds are likely during the evening and night. Temperatures are expected to ease slightly, with the maximum ranging between 40°C and 42°C, down from the 43-45°C recorded earlier this week.
Heavy rainfall warnings remain in place for large parts of southern and northeastern India. Kerala and Mahe are likely to receive very heavy rainfall on Thursday, while Coastal Karnataka could also witness intense spells of rain. Heavy rainfall is forecast across Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Karnataka.
The Northeast is expected to remain particularly wet, with very heavy rainfall likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are also forecast to receive heavy rain.
Eastern India will also see active weather, with heavy rainfall likely over Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in several areas.
