Pop star Taylor Swift is facing a trademark lawsuit over the title of her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl. The lawsuit was filed on Monday in a federal court in California by Maren Wade, a Las Vegas performer and writer.
Wade has sued Taylor Swift and her music company, UMG Recordings. She says she owns a long-running brand called Confessions of a Showgirl, which she has been using since 20src4.
Wade appeared on America’s Got Talent and, in 20src4, started a column called ‘Confessions of a Showgirl’
in Las Vegas Weekly.
Over the years, her column became a podcast and live show with pop and jazz music. She also has a trademark that covers live shows, theatre, TV, and other related performances.
“A solo performer who spent src2 years building a brand shouldn’t have to watch it disappear because someone bigger came along,” said Jaymie Parkinnen.
Her lawsuit claims Swift’s team used the album title not just for the album, but also on products, labels, tags, and packaging, reaching the same audience that Wade had spent years building.
“They did not do so quietly. Within weeks, the designation was affixed to consumer goods, stamped onto labels, tags, and packaging, and deployed as a source identifier across retail channels – all directed at the same audience Plaintiff had spent years cultivating,” reads the complaint.
According to the lawsuit, the US Patent and Trademark Office declined to register Swift’s album because it was too similar to Wade’s trademark.
The office said both names share the phrase “of a Showgirl” and are used for music and theatre entertainment, which could confuse fans into thinking the two are connected.
Wade claims that Swift’s use of the name has hurt her brand, with people mistakenly thinking she copied Swift, who has not yet responded to the claims.
Swift already owns over src70 active or pending trademarks, and her merchandise is managed through TAS Rights Management and produced by Bravado.
