The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (Visit Maldives) is hosting a series of roadshows in India to promote the destination and attract Indian travellers to the island nation. The “Welcome India” roadshow aims to bolster Maldives’ reputation as a top holiday destination, with events planned across three cities. The roadshows commenced on July 30 in New Delhi, followed by Mumbai on August src, and will conclude on August 3 in Bengaluru.
Visit Maldives is inviting prominent persons from the tourism industry from both nations to offer opportunities to establish new partnerships and allow Indian travellers to explore the country’s exceptional beauty. The Maldivian delegation that was part of the Mumbai roadshow included Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal and Mohamed Khaleel, the President’s Advisor on Tourism Development.
During the Welcome India roadshow, the focus was on highlighting the beaches of Maldives, its opulent resorts, cosy guesthouses, and cultural heritage. Attendees were given a taste of Maldivian hospitality while exploring business opportunities. Each roadshow features a raffle, allowing participants to win holiday packages.
Speaking to CNBC-TVsrc8, Mohamed Khaleel, CEO of Manta Air, and Managing Director, Pulse Hotels & Resorts, said, “Indian travellers are integral to the Maldivian tourism landscape. Our roadshow across three major Indian cities celebrates our enduring friendship and mutual appreciation.”
He added, “The Maldives offers unique experiences, from unparalleled underwater adventures to exclusive tropical island retreats, tailored specifically for our Indian guests. With multiple international flight options, including the recently launched Manta Air’s direct flight from Bangalore to the Maldives, and flexible tourist arrival norms for Indian visitors with visa-free entry, we ensure complete peace of mind for our guests.”
Earlier this year,
Indian travellers launched a boycott Maldives campaign after one of the country’s prominent politicians allegedly made a derogatory comment against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which led to backlash and tourist footfalls from India to Maldives declined significantly.
Through the roadshows, Maldives is looking to ensure an upward trend in footfalls from India. Visit Maldives is confident that the “Welcome India” roadshow will be a resounding success and enhance the Maldives’ appeal in the Indian market.
Meanwhile, President Mohamed Muizzu expressed his gratitude to India and China for their crucial role in bolstering the Maldives’ fragile economy, PTI reported recently. He highlighted the significance of both nations in helping manage the country’s debt crisis and in supporting its future development.
On July 27, at a ceremony commemorating the 59th anniversary of Maldives’ independence, President Muizzu acknowledged the financial support provided by both countries. “I thank the Chinese government and the Indian government on behalf of the Maldivian people for their cooperation with this effort to strengthen the economy, to assure our economic sovereignty, for the sake of the Maldivian people,” Muizzu said, Maldivian news portal adhadhu.com reported.
Muizzu’s rise to power last year was marked by his anti-India stance, which included calls for the removal of approximately 80 Indian military personnel stationed in the country with helicopters and Dornier aircraft donated by India.
However, following an agreement with India to replace the Indian military personnel involved in evacuating patients from various islands, Muizzu improved relations with India. He attended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony and thanked him for the ₹400 crore assistance from India.
Despite the efforts being made by the Maldives, it remains to be seen whether or not Indians will take a soft stance on the country and restart visiting the country.
