US envoys arrive at Moscow to begin peace talks The visit marks one of Washington’s most significant diplomatic pushes in months, bringing two of President Donald Trump’s closest negotiators directly to the Kremlin before they are expected to travel to Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Witoff, Trump’s special envoy and Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, arrived in the Russian capital on Saturday and were received by Kirill Dmitriev, Putin’s investment envoy and key figure in contacts between Moscow and Washington. They were then expected to meet Putin alongside senior Russian officials.

The war is now in its fifth year, and previous rounds of negotiations have repeatedly stalled when discussions moved from humanitarian issues to the politically explosive questions of territory, military guarantees and Ukraine’s future relationship with the West.
The Guardian reported that the latest mission is aimed at reviving peace efforts that had floundered in recent months, with Witkoff and Kushner expected to take the outcome of their Moscow discussions to Kyiv.

Is peace closer than before? There was no indication on Saturday that Moscow and Kyiv had narrowed their core difference before meetings began.
Any agreement would still have to address Russia’s territorial demands, Ukraine’s sovereignty and security guarantees, and the future of the Ukrainian military and its relationship with NATO. Those issues have defeated previous diplomatic efforts and remain at the heart of the war.
For now, Kushner and Witkoff’s arrival has reopened a diplomatic channel that had lost momentum.
Whether it produces more than another round of conversations will depend on what whether Moscow or Kyiv has yet shown a willingness to surrender: its position on the fundamental terms of peace.
